Fitted or snapback is one of the oldest debates in streetwear. Both are structured caps that can carry a bold front logo, but they fit, look and feel different. Here's how to pick the one that's right for you.
What is a fitted hat?
A fitted hat has a closed back with no strap or snap. It's sized to your head, so it sits snug and even all the way around. Many modern fitted caps use a stretch band inside so they hug your head comfortably while keeping a clean silhouette.
What is a snapback?
A snapback has an adjustable plastic snap closure at the back, so one size fits most heads. Snapbacks are known for their flat brim and tall, structured front, the classic streetwear and hip-hop shape.
Fitted vs snapback: side by side
- Fit: fitted hats feel locked in and secure. Snapbacks adjust in seconds and fit almost anyone.
- Look: a fitted cap has a seamless back and a more polished finish. A snapback shows the closure and usually a flat brim for a bolder look.
- Brim: fitted hats often have a curved visor. Snapbacks usually keep the brim flat, and you can curve it yourself if you prefer.
- Sizing: fitted hats need you to know your size. Snapbacks don't.
- Gifting: unsure of someone's size? A snapback is the safer gift.
How to measure for a fitted hat
- Wrap a soft measuring tape around your head where the hat will sit, about an inch above your eyebrows and ears.
- Keep the tape level and snug, not tight.
- Note the measurement and match it to the brand's size chart.
Stretch-band fitted caps often come in two sizes, roughly:
- S/M: 21.5 to 22.75 in (about 54 to 58 cm), fitted cap sizes about 6 7/8 to 7 1/4.
- L/XL: 23 to 24.4 in (about 59 to 62 cm), fitted cap sizes about 7 3/8 to 7 3/4.
If you're between sizes, the stretch band gives a little room, so most people go with the size their measurement falls into.
Which should you choose?
- Choose a fitted hat if you want a clean, secure fit and a more refined look.
- Choose a snapback if you want an easy, adjustable fit and a bold flat-brim shape.
Keeping your cap in shape
- Spot clean with a damp cloth and mild soap instead of using a washing machine.
- Let it air dry on a rounded surface, like a bowl or ball, so the crown keeps its shape.
- Store it upright or stacked with similar caps instead of crushed in a bag.
